Do you need an SD card for DJI RC / RC 2?

activate a DJI drone

If you are using the DJI RC or DJI RC 2 to fly your drone, you will find that there is also an SD card slot on the remote controller, You might be wondering if you need an SD card for your DJI RC.

As you may have already known all the photos and videos shot are stored on the SD card inserted in the aircraft, and the drone works all the same with or without an SD card in the DJI RC.

In this post, we will explain why you need an SD card, what kind of SD card you should get, and how to insert and format the SD card in your DJI RC.

Why do you need an SD card for DJI RC or RC 2?

There are at least two reasons.

Firstly, you can download the videos and photos from your drone to the DJI RC or RC 2, this is very important when you are running low on your aircraft storage, it also helps to create a backup of your files if a crash or accident happens.

Transferring your files to the DJI RC also allows you to preview the videos and photos using the remote controller without turning on your drone, You can also download them to your computer by connecting it to your PC or Mac with a USB-C cable.

The DJI RC doesn‘t have any internal storage to save the photos and videos that you take with your drone. Therefore, you need an SD card to store them. If you use the DJI RC 2, it comes with 32 GB of onboard storage, which would be enough for most cases.

Secondly, you can record everything that goes on your screen while you are flying or shooting. Sometimes, the screen recording is instrumental when there is something unexpected happens during your flight, you will have complete documentation of the whole process so that you can figure out what went wrong.

The screen recording videos can also become part of your video production if you are a vlogger. One thing you need to know is that the resolution of these videos is 720p.

All the screen recording videos are stored on the SD card that goes in the remote controller, If you don’t have an SD card for the DJI RC or RC 2, then you can’t do the screen recording.

To activate the screen recording, wipe down twice on the top of the screen and then tap on the record button to start.

What kind of SD card should you get for DJI RC?

Not all SD cards are compatible with the DJI RC. You need to get an SD card that meets the following requirements:

– The SD card must be a microSD card. This is the smallest size of SD card available.

– The SD card must be UHS-I Speed Grade 3 or above. This means that the SD card can write data at a minimum speed of 30 MB/s. This is important for recording high-quality videos without lag or corruption.
